Today, If You Will Hear His Voice

Today, If You Will Hear His Voice

Hebrews 4:6-7 New King James Version

6 Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, 7 again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said:

“Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.”

Those who were first preached about entering the promise land and the rest that God had prepared failed to do so because of unbelief. There unbelief resulted in them not trusting the Lord and actually fighting against the purposes and plans of God. If the devil can fill our hearts with unbelief, he can hinder and rob us of what God desires to do. We must believe and we must trust the Lord at all times.

The call to enter the rest of God is today. Every day we have a call to follow the Lord. We are called to walk by the Spirit, live in the Spirit, and be filled with the Spirit (Gal 5:16, 5:25, Eph 5:18). It is when we walk and live in the Spirit that the purposes of God will be accomplished. That we will enter and live in the rest that God has for us. The rest for the Israelites in the wilderness was the promise land. The promise land was conquered not because of the military might of Israel, but because under the leadership of Joshua they trusted the Lord and God went before them and made a way. The Lord always goes before us, but we must trust Him at all times.

The writer of Hebrews under the leading of the Holy Spirit writes “Today, if you will hear His voice”. The question is are we listening? Are we hearing? Are we following the leading and guidance of The Holy Spirit or are we only doing our own thing. Are we allowing God to lead and guide us, or are we being driven and motivated by selfish, sinful desire. The desires of our sinful nature are contrary to God and what He wants for our lives. But we must surrender to the Lord daily.

The warning is clear, “do not harden your hearts”. We harden our hearts when we fail to listen and obey the word of the Lord. The Holy Spirit is here to lead and guide us into all truth. He is here to lead, guide, direct us in all our ways. But we must guard our hearts. We cannot surrender to the sinful nature within us. The sinful nature within us must be surrendered to Almighty God. As we abide in Christ each day, this becomes a supernatural reality in which we walk in obedience not because we rely on our own power or might, but because we rely fully upon the Lord and His grace for us.
