Sacrifice and Offering You Did Not Desire, But a Body You Prepared For Me
Hebrews 10:5-10 New International Version
5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:
“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me;6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased.7 Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll— I have come to do your will, my God.’”
8 First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law. 9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Jesus is Almighty God. But there came a point in time when Jesus fully became man. He took on flesh and stepped into time. He never stopped being God but did all things as a man led and guided by The Holy Spirit. A body was prepared for Jesus. He had a physical body and He experienced and endured the suffering that we deserve because of sin. God is holy, righteous, and just. He must deal fully and rightly with sin. What our sin deserves is wrath and that is what was poured out on Jesus in full measure.
It states, “with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased.” The sacrifices of the Old Covenant were not sufficient to satisfy the wrath of God. They had to be done repeatedly. But by Jesus given His life, stepping in and taking our punishment, it only had to be done one time. He who was without sin became sin. Because of Jesus Christ we can draw near to the throne of grace without fear. The grace of God is lavished upon us not because we have earned it, but because of all that Jesus accomplished at Calvary.
From Psalm 40:6-8 it says ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—I have come to do your will, my God. Jesus simply came to accomplish the Father’s will. What was the will of The Father? For Him to suffer, die, and rise again on the third day. All that is under the Old Covenant simply points to the coming of the Messiah and the better covenant. To abandon the New Covenant for the old, is to abandon everything. The scroll it speaks of is the word of God spoken by the prophets under the leading and guidance of The Holy Spirit. Jesus calls His Father my God not because Jesus is not God, but because while on earth Jesus came as a servant to The Father’s will. Paul writes in Philippians 2:5-9 that Jesus emptied Himself of His heavenly glory and fully because a servant. But today our Lord and Savior sits at the right hand of The Father and at His name every knee shall bow in heaven, on earth, and even those under the earth. But the driving force of Jesus life was the will of His Father.
The writer of Hebrews says He sets aside the first to establish the second. Jesus didn’t come to destroy the law; He came to fulfill it. All things are fulfilled in Christ. All that we need is found in Jesus. Salvation is found in Christ alone. He is the door. He is the way, the truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through Jesus Christ alone. Every sacrifice and burnt offering of old all pointed to one thing, Jesus Christ. Everything is fulfilled in Jesus. Regardless of our suffering and hardship, the glory and rewards that await us in eternity is far greater than we can comprehend. Suffering may last for a moment, but we will rule and reign with Him for all eternity. His grace is sufficient and instead of running from Jesus during hardship, may we run to Him, abide, remain, and grow through the trial. Count it all joy when you go through various trials, because it is the trials that lead to true maturity and intimacy with Almighty God. It is those who walk closely and intimately with God who He shares the deep things of His heart.
The writer of Hebrews states by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. The will he speaks of is the Father’s will of Jesus coming, living among us, fully becoming man, living under the law, living without sin, suffering in ways He didn’t deserve, dying in ways He didn’t deserve so that you and I could receive eternal life that we don’t deserve. When we stand back and reflect on all that Christ has done for us it is truly amazing how precious a salvation we have. All because of His love for us. He was bruised, beaten beyond recognition, had nails driven in His hands and His feat all because of His love for us.
We are made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Our holiness and right standing before God is not dependent on our performance, behavior, or our good works. If it was, we would have something to boast before God about. But God has created and designed the way of salvation. It could only come through the broken body and shed blood of Jesus Christ. We owe Him everything and may we draw near, abide, and never let go. May we rely fully on His grace for all things and understand that regardless of what we face, He is working in the unseen and using all things to make us more like Him. He will fulfill every plan and purpose by His power and His might. He simply asks us to trust and follow. He is not asking us to come up with a plan. He is simply asking us to trust and surrender.
Prayer
Father thank you for such an amazing salvation. Thank you for the forgiveness you offer as a gift. May my life honor and glorify you in all things. Jesus thank you for choosing to come. Thank you for choosing suffering and death because of your great love for me. Help me to honor you in all things. Holy Spirit help me to live in obedience to your word. Remove from my life anything that would grieve you or hinder your plan. Father take my life and use it for your glory alone. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen!
